Hi, my name is Lindsay and I'm one of the periodontal treatment coordinators of Buffalo Dental Implant.
When you come in for a periodontal consult, one of the first things that we're going to do is periodontal charting or probing. What we're doing is taking a probe with millimeter markings or measuring the distance between the gum and the bone around your teeth. In a healthy mouth, this distance is between one to three millimeters deep.

In periodontal disease, what happens is we get bone loss around our teeth, which makes these pockets deeper. When we eat, food and bacteria gets stuck in these pockets. If it's not removed effectively or soon enough, it hardens into tartar on the side of the teeth, and then it's difficult or impossible to remove at home with home care.
The first step in treating periodontal disease is doing what's called scaling and root cleaning or a deep cleaning. During your deep cleaning, your hygienist is going to get you numb so that you're comfortable. (You can learn more here) We're going to use our instruments to clean below the gums, to remove that bacteria, to get everything back to a healthier state. We will review your home care, what you're currently doing and any adjustments we think that you need to make to improve home care going forward.

Four to six weeks after the deep cleaning, you'll come back for a reevaluation. At that appointment, we're going to remeasure the distance between the gum and the bone to see how you responded to the deep cleaning. If at that appointment, we find that there's still deep pockets remaining, we can talk about what to do to fix those surgically.
You can call Buffalo Dental Implant for a periodontal consultation at 716-882-3777. We look forward to meeting you.
